Microsoft: Blocked 5 Billion Phishing Emails throughout the Year of 2018

According to the global phishing email activity monitored by the Microsoft Threat Protection System, 6.5 trillion threat alerts can be detected in one day. In 2018, a total of 5 billion phishing emails and 300,000 suspicious activities were blocked. They are only the blocking data found by Microsoft corporate and individual users.

Microsoft Threat Protection includes Microsoft’s Azure ATP (advanced threat protection), Windows ATP and Office 365 ATP product lines. They scan for malicious programs on their products including Outlook , OneDrive, Azure, Xbox Live, Windows, Bing and Microsoft accounts.

Rob Lefferts, vice president of corporate security at Microsoft, revealed the achievement of Microsoft Threat Protection. According to the “Intelligent Security Graph” collected from Microsoft Threat Protection services, Microsoft analyzed a total of 470 billion emails, scanned more than 18 billion Bing pages, more than 200 OneDrive consumer & commercial web services, and Microsoft accounts. With more than 630 billion monthly verifications and more than 1 billion Azure user accounts, Microsoft Security Technologies detects 6.5 trillion threat alerts per day and detects 5 billion security threats per month.
As one of the world’s largest email providers, Microsoft’s Office 365 ATP analyzed more than 300,000 phishing emails and more than 8 million business email compromise (BEC) attacks last year.

In addition, Lefferts also pointed out that Microsoft’s threat protection program blocked an average of 14 million malicious logins per year. In 2018, it blocked 5 billion phishing emails, 300,000 suspicious activities, and 5 million cloud threats. In addition, the company detected 72 million vulnerabilities, 2 million horizontal moves, and 123 million bad security configurations, and provided 140 million security recommendations each year.

Microsoft also announced the launch of a new threat protection solution website, including ATP products, Cloud Security Information and Event Management Platform (SIEM) Azure Sentinel, App Security and other protection products.
